Being winter you can expect a few problems here and there but you would be surprised how many boilers break down and need replaced, or even how many pipes burst leading to full bathrooms and kitchens needing replaced. I just had to spend 2015 holiday money on a new bathroom last month! I came home after work one day to find water had leaked from behind the bath, I opened the side myself an found all the woodwork rotten away and a pipe with a large crack – clearly down to the cold temperatures. After some crying and sole searching I had to look for a local plumbers Dundee who was able to come out and fix the leak straight away and then quote for a proper fix.
I knew it was going to cost me a lot of money but I didn’t expect half as much damage as there was! The plumber came out and pointed out how far the water had spread and how much damage had been caused. Thankfully the water hadn’t damaged the foundations of the house but some of the floor boards in the bathroom needed lifted, replaced and some needed treated and left to dry over the space of a few days. In all due to the size of the bathroom and the amount of damage it took about 2 weeks with plumbers coming and going everyday – I have a small bathroom, so small you can’t fit more than one person in at a time which slowed the plumbers down a lot!
When it comes to winter time you need to really start checking things over. Make sure there isn’t any leaks, no pipes are damaged and general checkups. I hadn’t done anything for years and just assumed it would be all OK, it wasn’t. Winter weather puts a lot of pressure on your heating and pipes with temperatures going from below freezing to roasting hot. This temp change means your pipes expand and contract with the heat and cold which in some cases can lead to cracks and leaks.
Now, I am the proud owner of a new bathroom. Didn’t cost as much as I expected when I got the list of damages on the first evening so I do still have some money in the holiday fund, but nothing is being booked yet. Hopefully this year I won’t need a plumber to do anything other than service my boiler!Read More
